This morning, I stumbled across a strange scenario when preparing a big image-only mailshot for a client. After sending him the proof as normal he instantly replied: “Why is the image clipping in Outlook?”.

As it turns out, email clients that use the Word 2007 rendering engine (ie. Outlook 2007 and Outlook 2010) have inherited the Word 2007 image height limit of 18 inches.

This is nice to know if you’re working in Word, but how about when you’re designing for email? We ran a test and found out that Outlook ‘07 and Outlook ‘10 truncate the upper portion of all images higher than 1728px from the top-down. So, if your image is 250px longer than the 1728px limit, 250px will get lopped off the top. Take a look at the screenshots below to see this in action:

Outlook 2003 (and all other major email clients)

You may be wondering, “Who adds images larger than 1728px high to their emails?” Well, sometimes it happens (images says more than a 1000 words and so on)… So before you warm up your scrollbar, don’t forget that Outlook has its limits.

In a densely populated city, land can be an elusive commodity. But that was no such hurdle for the residents of these extraordinary villas.

While there may not have been any suitable square footage at ground level, they have instead built their homes on the roof of a shopping centre.

The four homes are so well hidden on the eight-storey complex that many of the locals have failed to notice them, it was reported on www.hugchina.com.

Sometimes the sky itself is the best show in town. On January 26, people from Perth, Australia gathered on a local beach to watch a sky light up with delights near and far. Nearby, fireworks exploded as part of Australia Day celebrations. On the far right, lightning from a thunderstorm flashed in the distance. Near the image centre, though, seen through clouds, was the most unusual sight of all: Comet McNaught.

The photogenic comet was so bright that it even remained visible though the din of Earthly flashes. Comet McNaught continues to move out from the Sun and dim, but should remain visible in southern skies with binoculars through the end of this month. The above image is actually a three photograph panorama digitally processed to reduce red reflections from the exploding firework.

A while back I wrote about Photosynth, a new image technology created by Microsoft. Now Adobe has come up with something similar, yet quite different and unique. Infinite Images is created by the Israeli scientist Shai Avidan, hired by Adobe last year.

This new image technology enables you to create a three dimensional, virtual place from any set of photos where the photos themselves not necessarily are from the same place or using the same motif/composition.

The video below illustrates what I’m trying to tell:

This could be very cool if it actually works for anyone…

Splashup, formerly Fauxto, is a powerful editing tool and photo manager. With all the features professionals use and novices want, it’s easy to use, works in real-time and allows you to edit many images at once.

Splashup runs in all browsers, integrates seamlessly with top photosharing sites (requires signing up), and even has its own file format so you can save your work in progress.

Click the preview picture below to give it a try:

As an alternative you might also want to check out the new browser version of Photoshop, Photoshop Express. As with (almost) any Adobe product this requires registration but my first impression was very good. I will post about this later…

If you’ve started to get bored with the general Windows XP desktop then the following might be for you.

Step 1 – Replace the desktop theme

Microsoft has put out a really sharp-looking XP desktop theme based on Windows Media Player 11. It simply installs as another desktop theme in your Display Options; no need for any third-party applications.

Update! You might also want to try out Royale Remixed by “~oddbasket”. Less bugs and and a very beautiful theme indeed. Thanks to Balu for sharing!

Step 2 – Add a new background image

If you haven’t replaced the background image already you could visit Deziner Folio and get the set of 74 Hi Res Windows Vista Wallpapers.

Step 3 – Live it up a little

Install Google Desktop and add live search and all the gadgets you can fit on your desktop. After a minute or two your Windows XP could look something like this:

There you go, 3 simple steps to make your welcome screen less boring. Feel free to add more steps through the comments below if you know of any other eye-candy’s worth having!

For those who don’t already know, the Gimp is a powerful, open source image editing application. For more info on the Gimp visit gimp.org. GIMPshop is essentially the same program with some cosmetic changes.

If you’ve never used Photoshop before, you may not appreciate the GIMPshop hack. What Scott Moschella’s done is renamed and reorganized GIMP’s tools, options, windows, and menus to closely resemble Adobe Photoshop’s menu structure and naming conventions. Many of the menu options and even whole menus were recreated to faithfully reproduce a Photoshop-like experience. After running this GIMPshop hack, you’ll find that Photoshop and the GIMP are strikingly similar.

The latest version is available for Linux and Mac, and there’s also an earlier release available for Windows users. Updates are frequent so a Windows version should be available soon. So for all of you designers and photo enthusiasts that can’t afford to buy Adobe Photoshop this is a fantastic solid and free alternative.

For more information, screenshots and downloads visit plasticbugs.com.
