The US rank and traffic site compete.com has just undergone a major makeover. The data are now presented much nicer than earlier and you can extract graphs to put on your own site if you feel the urge;

A while back the international competitor, Alexa.com, did something similar but I think Compete is way ahead this time when it comes to user interface.

The only main downside is that most of the data on compete.com requires you buying a Pro account which most people (myself included) can’t afford.

Should all these data be free and available for everyone? And what’s your opinion on these traffic/rank sites? Feel free to share your thoughts/concerns/ideas in the comments below.

Alexa.com recently announced that they’ve changed the algorithm that calculates the rank for any given website. This means that rather than basing the rank on data collected from the Alexa toolbar they’re now aggregating data from multiple sources to give you a better indication of website popularity among the entire population of Internet users.

Since its beginning in 1998 Alexa Rankings have become a yardstick by which website popularity is measured. I for one welcome the change as it looks like the new algorithm benefits my rankings It could very well be that European and other non-US websites will see an increase in measured traffic due to the broader data collection.

Below are a couple of screenshots displaying recent Alexa stats for my website:

I’ve never before been ranked this high which may be the result of the new ranking algorithm. It could also be a temporarily side-effect of my recent post about the fix for Alex King’s “Popularity Contest” plugin. Only time will tell but I’m optimistic and believe that Alexa has taken a giant step in the right direction.

I’d love to hear how the above mentioned change affected your ranking (both US and non-US website owners).
