PortableApps.com is the world’s most popular portable software solution allowing you to take your favourite software with you. A fully open source and free platform, it works on any portable storage device (USB flash drive, memory card, portable hard drive, etc), cloud drive (DropBox, Google Drive, etc), or installed locally. With millions of users all over the world and a full collection of open source software as well as compatible freeware and commercial software and partners in the software and hardware industry, it is the most complete solution for life on the go.

It was was founded by John T. Haller, the developer behind numerous portable applications including “Portable Firefox” which started the portable software trend. We’ve been making software portable since March 2004. Today, our team stands at over 100 developers, translators, application packagers, designers and release testers. Their goal is to centralize the knowledge and development of portable software efforts and build a single, open platform which any software or hardware developer can use.

Some of my personal favourites are:

(Reuters) – Samsung SDI Co Ltd said on Tuesday that it will shut down its plasma panel production business, citing the decline in overall demand for plasma display panel televisions. Samsung SDI, in a statement, said it will concentrate its resources on growing its energy and materials businesses. The firm plans to end all plasma display operations by November 30 2014. This follows after Panasonic’s statement from last year outlining that Panasonic’s latest television, the ZT60, is the best plasma the company has ever made. It will also be the last plasma panel to come out of the company’s research and development department, which means Panasonic will never make a higher-quality plasma television.

Rumors that Panasonic would end plasma research and development first surfaced in December 2013, and a report from Nikkei the following month said the company had closed down R&D with plans to pull out of plasma altogether as early as 2014. Panasonic Display Vice President Kiyoshi Okamoto confirmed to The Verge today at an event in New York that development has ceased, and said that the ZT60 uses “the last plasma panel” from research and development. Okamoto was quick to note, however, that panel development is not the same as television production: he made it clear that Panasonic would continue to make and sell plasma televisions into 2014 at the very least, saying that “we have a responsibility” to customers to continue production.

The only main company still producing and developing is LG, but now with all other main actors leaving the ship this might also come to an end… what do you all think?

After online retailer Amazon entered the tablet market towards the end of 2011, it now seems that the firm is going to be launching its own smartphone at some point in 2012, according to the latest rumours.

Amazon`s approach to the tablet market is defined by the cut price Kindle Fire, which the company sells almost at costs in the hope that its investment will be recouped after users purchase content using the device.

The Kindle Fire, while only available in the US in its first iteration, is set to get a sequel in the next few weeks, with some sources claiming that this will eventually be followed by a standalone Amazon smartphone that will do battle with the iPhone range.

The Wall Street Journal reports that the Amazon phone is already being put through its paces in the prototype stage and could be on shelves before Christmas, or at least in the first few months of 2013.

It is thought that Amazon will be creating a smartphone with a display measuring somewhere between four and five inches in size, presumably with a high definition resolution. This would put it in the same league as other high end handsets like the Samsung Galaxy S3 or the HTC One X, which feature 4.8 and 4.7 inch displays respectively.

It seems certain that Amazon would pick the Google Android operating system for its smartphone after using it for the Kindle Fire tablet. However, it remains unclear which version would make the cut for this handset.

The Kindle Fire has a famously overhauled version of Android 2.3 onboard, with a heavily customised interface which puts the emphasis on encouraging users to download books, rent movies and buy applications so that Amazon can make back its money.

Android 2.3 was looking long in the tooth even at the time that the Kindle Fire arrived, while Google has recently announced Android 4.1 for smartphones and tablets. This could mean that an Amazon mobile will come equipped with the latest iteration, although past evidence suggests that this may not be the case.

While the tablet market is dominated by Apple, the smartphone market is far more competitive and has handsets of all shapes and sizes for people of varied budgets and needs. If Amazon is to take on this sector then it could face an uphill struggle.

Of course if it is able to pack high end features, such as the aforementioned large display and a multicore processor solution, into a smartphone which is half the price of similarly specced alternatives, then it will find it easier to make waves.

Amazon will also have to strike deals with various mobile network providers in order to get its handsets offered alongside other contract phones. It could of course go it alone and offer the device solely through its own website, which would mean that it will be SIM free but come with an upfront cost for the consumer to bear. Only time will tell whether Amazon is indeed planning to move into the mobile market.

Unlike traditional batteries, Prieto’s 3D structure interdigitates the cathode and the anode. Prieto has achieved a technology breakthrough with this architecture. Development is still in the early stages but if it succeeds it’s supposed to create batteries that lasts up to 5 times longer than today’s batteries and recharges in only a few minutes. It’s also more eco-friendly as it consists of less chemical waste products. Video below illustrates;

Sony has finally placed a launch date on its upcoming PlayStation Vita portable console, confirming that after a Japanese release in late December it will be heading to Europe and the US by February 22nd 2012.

This is great news for anyone who has been anticipating the follow-up to the PSP and has been less interested in Nintendo`s rival 3DS handheld. The PlayStation Vita is undeniably faster and more grown-up than the 3DS, offering serious gamers a chance to get their fix of action when they are on the move.

Sony has endowed the PS Vita with a brand new five inch OLED display which is touch sensitive to give you tactile interactive options when you are playing games, consuming media or browsing menus. A second touch panel is found on the back of the device, which allows you to make inputs without covering portions of the screen with your fingers. This is a unique controller setup that has not been attempted before and should expand the horizons for what game developers can achieve.

The PS Vita comes with not one but two analogue control sticks on the front, as well as the PlayStation buttons and a directional pad, just like you would expect to find on a controller for a home console. Nintendo recently announced that it would be launching an add-on for the 3DS that adds a second analogue stick, which suggests that Sony is right to include this feature from day one.

Two distinct editions of the PS Vita will be available; a basic Wi-Fi version and one which also has 3G connectivity onboard. It seems that the Wi-Fi option will be perhaps the most popular because internet rumours suggest that 3G downloads will be limited to 20GB a month. This is because the PS Vita will not have a subscription charge following its initial purchase. Wireless gaming will still be possible via Wi-Fi with no limit, but it does mean that the extra investment in the 3G edition might be wasted.

Social networking features will be a major draw for the PS Vita as sites such as Facebook and Twitter are going to be integrated in the core operating system. In addition you will be able to make calls using Skype and check in via Foursquare, which means that this has all the bases covered.

Both the CPU and graphics chip will have four physical processing cores, so the PS Vita is going to be the most powerful portable gaming system around when it is released. Sony has essentially equated its graphical capabilities to that of the PlayStation 3 and although this has to be taken with a pinch of salt there is no doubt that early indications suggest that it will be a screamer. The only thing it lacks is compatibility with Freeview DVD or other formats, since Sony has ditched the UMD storage found on the PSP. A digital download store and onboard memory will make up for this missing link.

Windows Phone 7 was recently the beneficiary of a major update known as Mango, bringing its official version number up to 7.5. This update included more than 500 changes, such as adding streamlined app switching, Twitter integration and a brand new web browser.

Mr Ballmer said that Windows Phone 7 is far less complicated to interact with than Android, claiming that only computer experts are able to get the most out of the experience available on Google`s smartphones. He was clearly exaggerating to make a point, but there is no doubt that Microsoft is aiming to appeal to first time smartphone buyers rather than tech-savvy consumers.

While Android 4.0 retains the multi-homescreen interface of its predecessors, allowing users to customise and add widgets to each as they see fit, Windows Phone 7 opts for a far more restricted but undeniably simpler system. This employs one main home hub with moveable Live Tiles that provide notifications, information and shortcuts to applications and websites. Users can arrange these as they see fit, but the cohesive look and feel along with the intuitive process of placing individual tiles definitely gives it the edge over Android.

The HTC Titan is the smartphone that Microsoft is touting as the flagship device for the new Windows Phone 7.5 Mango update and interestingly enough it shares one similarity with the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, Google`s front-running Android 4.0 handset. That feature is a very large display, with the Titan sporting a 4.7 inch SLCD screen while the Galaxy Nexus has a 4.65 Super AMOLED Plus unit.

The Titan has a 1.5GHz single core processor while the Galaxy Nexus has a 1.2GHz dual core chip. Microsoft`s offering may be technically less powerful than Google`s, but since Windows Phone 7 is better optimised to utilise this hardware the difference is negligible.

Personal preference plays a large part in making a choice between one smartphone platform or another. While Android lets users personalise their handset, Windows Phone has a far more unified, consistent experience guaranteed, thanks to minimum hardware specs enforced by Microsoft which means you can pick almost any handset that runs it and enjoy the same basic features that run in a predictable manner.

If you do want to buy a new smartphone device, whether based on Android or Windows Phone, then it makes sense to harness a voucher or deal provided by a site such as Groupon as this can net you big savings. In a rapidly evolving market, cutting edge handsets rarely retain their positions for extended periods, so paying a premium does not make sense.
