This is more complicated than it seems, too. You can’t just use a single method, as you could have Windows PCs, Macs, Android phones, iPhones and iPads, game consoles, smart TVs, and set-top streaming boxes all connected to your home router. Worse yet, many of these devices — laptops, smartphones, and tablets — won’t only use data on your home network. So you can’t even rely on a data usage meter that shows how much data you’ve downloaded on your laptop, as some of that will have taken place outside of your home on a different Wi-Fi network.

Different operating systems do have different tools that can help. GlassWire is a free and polished network-monitoring tool that will track data usage on all versions of Windows. On Windows 10 and 8, you could also set a specific connection as a “metered” connection and Windows will track data usage for it. This will change how Windows and some applications use the connection, however.

After you’ve installed security software to protect your PC from invasion, it’s time to clean all the preinstalled junk off your computer. Most boxed PCs come chock-full of bloatware intended to make dough for the PC makers, and you probably don’t need (or want) most of it clogging up your system resources.

That’s where PC Decrapifier comes in. This pint-size wonder program scans your PC, brings up a checklist of the bloatware installed on your machine, and helps you wipe ’em all away in one fell swoop. Yay! A secondary screen lists all of your programs if you want to nuke even more. Ignore it, or just be careful to avoid erasing something important.

Beginning January 12, 2016, only the most current version of Internet Explorer available for a supported operating system will receive technical supports and security updates. Internet Explorer 11 is the last version of Internet Explorer, and will continue to receive security updates, compatibility fixes, and technical support on Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10.

What does this mean?

It means you should take action. After January 12, 2016, Microsoft will no longer provide security updates or technical support for older versions of Internet Explorer. Security updates patch vulnerabilities that may be exploited by malware, helping to keep users and their data safer. Regular security updates help protect computers from malicious attacks, so upgrading and staying current is important.

Microsoft Edge appears to be a decent upgrade from Microsoft. However, I would strongly encourage those who haven’t already done so to swap IE with either Firefox, Chrome or Opera.

Happy (and secure) surfing in 2016!

Struggling to get rid of unwanted toolbars? Here’s the solution you’ve been looking for.

There are numerous toolbars which is designed to be below the address bar of your browser and give you easier access to certain functions.

Most of them are harmless and are often installed along with other programs. Some may even have a hint of benefit to it, and if you do not like them, you can easily remove them by right clicking on the menu bar and uncheck the left of the pop-up menu that appears.

But there are toolbars that are installed without having requested it, and that is primarily designed to spy on your web activity, presenting pop-up advertising at all hours, and send you to sites you have not had intentions to visit.

To remove them

The small free program Toolbar Cleaner has proven to be one of the easiest ways to remove unwanted toolbars. All you have to do is:

1. Download the program from toolbarcleaner.com.

2. Run the program. It will detect any toolbars automatically.

3. Select the toolbars you want to remove and press the remove button. The rest goes hopefully by itself.

Not only toolbars

Toolbar Cleaner does not remove toolbars, but also unwanted apps in Chrome and called Browser Helper Objects in Internet Explorer, which in some cases can take complete control of your browser. The program works against Internet Explorer, Firefox and Chrome, and is completely free.

This morning, I stumbled across a strange scenario when preparing a big image-only mailshot for a client. After sending him the proof as normal he instantly replied: “Why is the image clipping in Outlook?”.

As it turns out, email clients that use the Word 2007 rendering engine (ie. Outlook 2007 and Outlook 2010) have inherited the Word 2007 image height limit of 18 inches.

This is nice to know if you’re working in Word, but how about when you’re designing for email? We ran a test and found out that Outlook ‘07 and Outlook ‘10 truncate the upper portion of all images higher than 1728px from the top-down. So, if your image is 250px longer than the 1728px limit, 250px will get lopped off the top. Take a look at the screenshots below to see this in action:

Outlook 2003 (and all other major email clients)

You may be wondering, “Who adds images larger than 1728px high to their emails?” Well, sometimes it happens (images says more than a 1000 words and so on)… So before you warm up your scrollbar, don’t forget that Outlook has its limits.

Firefox now tries to adjust the zoom level according to your Windows settings, as well as better supporting high DPI displays. It’s not going to be to everyone’s liking.

I just upgraded to Firefox 22 on this computer and had to do the following in order to view webpages “correctly”:

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.

(2) In the filter box, type or paste pix and pause while the list is filtered

(3) Double-click layout.css.devPixelsPerPx and change its value to 1.0Â for original sized fonts (like they used to be in FF 21 –), or a larger ratio for larger fonts. For example, 1.25 corresponds to 125% font size in Windows display settings.

More info in this thread: How do I set the default font size to a lower value?

If you like living your digital life in the browser, then the Chrome OS could be exactly what you’re looking for. It’s fast, geared for an Internet teather yet able to function on its own, and it’s a bold step into the future of how operating systems work. The Chrome OS will be available to the public on June 15 (as I type this).

Chromium OS is an open-source project that aims to build an operating system that provides a fast, simple, and more secure computing experience for people who spend most of their time on the web. Here you can review the project’s design docs, obtain the source code, and contribute. To learn more about the project goals, read the announcement blog post.

To start using it you need to get yourself a Chromebook. Chromebooks boot in 8 seconds and resume instantly. Your favorite websites load quickly and run smoothly, with full support for the latest web standards and Adobe® Flash®. In fact, Chromebooks are designed to get faster over time as updates are released.

Some vulnerabilities have been reported in Apache HTTP Server, which can be exploited by malicious people to gain access to potentially sensitive information, cause a DoS (Denial of Service) and potentially compromise a vulnerable system.

1) The “ap_proxy_ajp_request()” function in modules/proxy/mod_proxy_ajp.c of the mod_proxy_ajp module returns the “HTTP_INTERNAL_SERVER_ERROR” error code when processing certain malformed requests. This can be exploited to put the backend server into an error state until the retry timeout expired by sending specially crafted requests.

2) The mod_isapi module unloads ISAPI modules before the request processing is complete, potentially leaving orphaned callback pointers behind. This can be exploited by sending a specially crafted request followed by a reset packet.

Successful exploitation may allow the execution of arbitrary code with SYSTEM privileges on Windows systems.

3) An error exists within the header handling when processing subrequests, which can lead to sensitive information from a request being handled by the wrong thread if a multi-threaded Multi-Processing Module (MPM) is used.

To protect yourself and your server please upgrade to version 2.2.15 as soon as you can.

As I’m sure a lot of you have noticed my blog has been gone for the last 10 days. Reason being a complete new set-up on the server which is kindly hosted by my brother by the way. I wont go in to too much details but let us just say that a new structure with increased security was needed…

Therefore, should you be running your own Linux server with Apache please feel free to share your favuorite tricks that makes your server “bullet-proofed”.

Thanks in advance, and looking forward to hearing from you all

I’ve just updated to the latest Opera 10 Beta. I must say I’m very impressed. Loads quick, both start-up and page loading times. Looks nice and adding widgets (like the FF plugins) is straightforward and quick.

Just have in mind that, like Opera states:

This is a beta version of Opera. Please use it only on properly backed-up computers. It is a stability release and records additions, fixes, and improvements made to Opera 10.0 beta 2. For your reference, please see the previous Opera 10.0 beta 2 for Windows changelog which was released on July 16, 2009.

I haven’t had any issues but others definitely had (thus the stability update). To try it on yourself simply visit their “next” download section.

Happy surfing!
