It’s common knowledge that a lot of (most) web/graphic designers uses a Mac. Consequently, they tend to use Mac fonts in their style sheets as their first options (at least quite often). Unfortunately fonts like Lucida Grande, Lucida sans etc. are NOT included in the normal Windows package.

Well know you can get it too! After a bit of googeling I finally found the best emulations of all the OS X system fonts. If you just want to get the emulated Mac Lucida fonts go here.

Sometimes the sky itself is the best show in town. On January 26, people from Perth, Australia gathered on a local beach to watch a sky light up with delights near and far. Nearby, fireworks exploded as part of Australia Day celebrations. On the far right, lightning from a thunderstorm flashed in the distance. Near the image centre, though, seen through clouds, was the most unusual sight of all: Comet McNaught.

The photogenic comet was so bright that it even remained visible though the din of Earthly flashes. Comet McNaught continues to move out from the Sun and dim, but should remain visible in southern skies with binoculars through the end of this month. The above image is actually a three photograph panorama digitally processed to reduce red reflections from the exploding firework.

Only 6 months after he left Microsoft Bill Gates is starting a new company – bgC3.

Nobody knows for sure what the company is supposed to do but new offices, computers and furniture are already acquired. It’s located within a short distance from Gates private “palace” just outside Seattle.

What’s on the agenda?

Some believe the company is attached to Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation – the charity organization run together with his wife. Others believe it could be related to a new form of nuclear reactor which he’s developing with his friend Nathan Myhrvold.

Holding company?

Some has even suggested that it’s a pure holding company offering financial help to new start-up companies.

According to insiders the “bg” in the company name stands for “Bill Gates”, the “C” for «catalyst» and the number 3 refers to Gates third company separated from Microsoft and the charity foundation.

Gates has previously said that he wishes to help younger people following in his footsteps when it comes to revolutionize the global technology. So the main question now is where do we apply for start-up funds

Ooops, it seems Asus has stepped into really deep water this time!

Apparently Asus is shipping software crackers and confidential documents on the recovery DVDs that come with its laptops.

The startling discovery was made by a PC Pro reader whose antivirus software was triggered by a key cracker for the WinRAR compression software, which was located on the recovery DVD for his Asus laptop.

He discovered a number of other suspicious files, including:

A directory called “Crack” that appears to contain serial numbers for other software packages

A directory containing a large number of confidential Microsoft documents for PC manufacturers, including associated keys and program files

Various internal Asus documents and source code for Asus software

The reader sent the disc to PC Pro, and they’ve verified the existence of such files.

The key cracker is found in the WinRAR application folder on the recovery disc and is credited to “Freddy Cruger”.

One of the confidential Asus documents includes a PowerPoint presentation that details “major problems” identified by the company, including application compatibility issues.

An Asus spokesman has apologised to the customers who found the files. “We will be investigating this at quite a high level,” he told PC Pro. “Once the investigation is complete, we will ensure it doesn’t happen again.”

He was unable comment on how the files got on the disc (big surprise). So now you know how to get a crack for your favourite apps and OS…

Most of the Microsoft Live products, including Live Messenger, are now available in new Beta versions.

Windows Live is Microsoft’s collection of applications and services that according to them will help the user to gain information and keep in touch with family, friends and colleagues he/she cares about.

Windows Live was launched back in 2006 with Live releases of existing products like Messenger, Hotmail and Spaces. However, more than 40 Live products was announced at the time but only a few has seen the day of light so far and some will probably never surface at all.

In 2007 Microsoft released a second “Live wave”, this time including brand new products like Mail, Photo Gallery, the blogging tool Writer, and several services like Events, SkyDrive, Calendar and Family Safety.

Now Microsoft are building up the release of the third “Live wave” of products. First round includes new beta releases of Messenger, Mail, Photo Gallery, Movie Maker, Writer, Toolbar and Family Safety.

Microsoft has not made a complete list of all the updates so far but among the news released so far it’s clear that Live Messenger 2009 amongst others have been given a new design which according to Microsoft will make it easier to configure for each individual user. A screenshot is shown below:

The industry giant Intel can more than just create micro processors (CPU’s).

Yesterday, at the California firm’s annual developers forum in San Francisco, Intel’s chief technology officer Justin Rattner showed off a wireless electric power system that analysts say could revolutionize modern life by freeing devices from transformers and wall outlets.

Electricity was sent wirelessly to a lamp on stage, lighting a 60 watt bulb that uses more power than a typical laptop computer. The technology, Wireless Energy Resonant Link, is transmitting energy using the magnetic field not the electric field which does not affect human bodies.

“The trick with wireless power is not can you do it; it’s can you do it safely and efficiently,” Intel researcher Josh Smith said in an online video explaining the breakthrough.

The technology is still in an early stage of development and much research remains before it can be brought to market. However, the implications seems endless. Imagine a world without cables, that would really be something wouldn’t it?!

Some of us may not live to see this happen, but then again technology develops faster than one might think (most of the time). Can you see this happen in the near future, and would you consider it safe?

I’m sure some of you have noticed already but for the rest of you (us) I’d like to announce that the number one database management tool has finally reached version 3. To see what’s new have a look at the release notes.

I don’t think all of you can start using it immediately as it requires PHP 5.2+ and MySQL 5.0+. However, if you are running a local server it shouldn’t be a problem.

First impressions are very good and the opening page looks better than ever. Congratulations to the development team for reaching yet another milestone!

Feel free to let me know what you think and if you encounter any difficulties during upgrading.

Download and test the latest release from the official download page.

The Linkscanner feature in Grisoft’s free anti virus solution, AVG 8, has been way too active for some. Linkscanner is meant to assist users to see whether their results in Google (among others) leads to safe or unsafe websites.

In order to do so the software scans the site before the user actually visits it. It’s done by a component called Search-Shield.

Until recently this feature was only available in the full (paid) version, but after being included in the free version as well several websites experienced a massive increase in traffic.

Smaller websites would be lead to believe that it was a DOS attack (Denial Of Service) as the traffic from AVG’s Search-Shield would exceed normal traffic. In some cases the servers were reported to go down. An in-depth analysis is available at AVG Linkscanner Watch.

The server logs clearly shows the massive increase in traffic is caused by Grisoft. Multiple complaints has been forwarded and a fix is now being “shipped” in order to solve the problem.

With 70 million potential users I’m glad I’m running this site off a powerful server with no bandwidth restrictions to worry about. What about you, have you been noticing any changes in traffic recently?

Let’s say your ready to leave the office and have 20+ apps running and want them all to quit instantly. With “Close All” you can, it works just as if you were pressing the close button for each application.

It does not use system resources because it only flashes a ‘close’ signal to all open windows on the desktop and then ceases. Just place a shortcut to the tool in the Start Menu, Quick Launch or elsewhere.
