As a result, NVIDIA will offer an optimized Opera 9.5 browser in its suite of pre-integrated, in-house and third-party software for the NVIDIA® Tegra family of computer-on-chip Windows Mobile and Windows CE solutions.

In an unformal comment Tor Odland at Opera says “our phones will behave like an iPhone on speed”. If it’s true and the rest of the specifications like storage and battery life can compete (or be even better) this seems like a VERY good alternative.

What do sex, drugs and software have in common? They are the top three things purchased off spam email.

Have you ever thought about why you receive so much spam every day (for me it averages between 20 and 50 messages a day even after SpamAssassin has done its filtering)? Well, you can blame the 29 percent of Internet users that admit to purchasing items from spam email, according to a recent survey. Often these goods are pirated, counterfeit, or cheap knock-off’s that would be difficult to come by through the legitimate market.

More than 150 billion spam messages circulate daily, accounting for more than 85 percent of the total number of emails sent throughout the world. The sheer volume of spam consumes an enormous amount of bandwidth and remains one of the Internet’s biggest security problems.

And there’s little incentive to stop the spam. Recent FBI prosecutions of “bot-herders” suggest that the going rate is as little as $5 to $10 per million messages. Response rates are generally low – approximately 10 purchases are made for every million spam messages sent – but enough people purchase from spam to make it worthwhile for spammers to continue waging battle on your “Junk” folder in the hopes that one will slip through into your Inbox.

The top spam sellers include sexual enhancement pills, software, “adult material” and luxury items such as watches and jewellery.

The survey of Internet users was done by in June and July of 2008 by Marshal’s Threat Research and Content Engineering (TRACE) team. Marshal’s research indicates that just five botnets account for 80 percent of the world’s spam.

In 2004, only 20 percent of Internet users copped to purchasing items off spam email, according to a similar survey by Forrester Research. The increase in the last few years has led to a dramatic influx of spam email; reports indicate that global spam volumes doubled for the year ending June 2008 from the previous year’s levels.

The trend is not moving in the right direction as you’ve probably noticed. The question is how to fix it!? Maybe the ISP’s should be more active along with all hosting companies offering email services? What do you think could make this problem go away?

In a windowless underground computer lab in California, young men are busy cooking up viruses, spam and other plagues of the computer age. Grant Joy runs a program that surreptitiously records every keystroke on his machine, including user names, passwords, and credit-card numbers. And Thomas Fynan floods a bulletin board with huge messages from fake users. Yet Joy and Fynan aren’t hack – they’re students in a computer-security class at Sonoma State University. And their professor, George Ledin, has showed them how to penetrate even the best antivirus software.

A screen name once connected to animated TV dad Homer Simpson is being used to spread malware.

In a 2003 episode of The Simpsons, writers revealed that Homer’s e-mail address was chunkylover53@aol.com. Prior to the episode’s airing, the address was registered by one of the show’s writers, who used it to answer hundreds of e-mails from Simpsons fans. Years later, the chunkylover53 screen name has resurfaced, and it’s now being used to distribute a trojan disguised as a Simpsons movie file.

According to FaceTime malware research director Chris Boyd, chunkylover53 is sending out auto-reply messages to users which promises a special exclusive episode of the show available for download. The link in the message leads to an executable file. Upon launching the trojan, the user is presented with a fake error message which is followed by several real error messages and, finally, a blank screen. Upon restarting, the system will run noticeable slower and be prone to crashes.

So again, it’s not a good idea to blindly click links in emails without verifying the authenticity of the sender. We should know better by now don’t you think?

Microsoft is about to launch their Windows Vista Compatibility Center which will provide information on more than 9,000 products (5,500 devices and 3,500 software programs).

Is it just me or shouldn’t this really been out a long time ago?

Maybe the focus on Windows 7 and the possible release of DirectX 11 early next year has taken the focus away from what’s most important – the current OS version and its (future) users?

But then again it looks like if something fails you could always buy your way back. Besides Microsoft’s original plan to lift the corporate image with a $300 million makeover they’ve now also earmarked an additional $200 million for Windows advertising.

I get the feeling that someone (MS) is trying to ship (push) as many copies of Vista as possible (to cover development costs) before they pull Windows 7 out of the hat, possibly as early as next year. I’m not completely convinced the time of worry is over and that moving to Vista is such a great thing. Think I’ll skip a version this time…

What’s your take on this? Have you taken the step and “upgraded”? What about in the office?

In a letter published today Bill Veghte, Senior Vice President at Microsoft Corporation, shares some thoughts on XP, Vista and beyond (Windows 7). A lot of people are watching Microsoft closely these days and wonder what will happen now that Bill Gates resigns.

Today, more than 1 billion personal computers around the world run Windows. Over the years, Windows has been the catalyst for innovations that have transformed the way people communicate, access information, create and share content, and much more, at work and at home. Windows is the platform that most people use to get the greatest value and benefit from their personal computers. Windows is also the platform that brings together the broadest array of choices across PCs, devices and applications. To all of our Windows customers, thank you! To the hundreds of thousands of partners that develop millions of solutions for Windows, thank you.
