Upgrading to WordPress 2.5

This is just to announce that my design/development blog has been successfully updated/upgraded to WordPress 2.5 RC1. As most of you probably have noticed already the WP 2.5 release candidate was announced earlier today on the WordPress development blog.

Following yet another astonishingly easy upgrade I’ve also tested plugin compatibility against the latest version. The following post “Running on WordPress 2.5 RC1” should answer a few questions for those of you considering an early upgrade.

I don’t see any backsides throwing yourselves at it, as the new admin panel and the overall speed seams fantastic. Congrats to all of you WordPress developers, this sure was a pleasant experience. Thank you!

Give XP a makeover

If you’ve started to get bored with the general Windows XP desktop then the following might be for you.

Step 1 - Replace the desktop theme

Microsoft has put out a really sharp-looking XP desktop theme based on Windows Media Player 11. It simply installs as another desktop theme in your Display Options; no need for any third-party applications.

Update! You might also want to try out Royale Remixed by “~oddbasket”. Less bugs and and a very beautiful theme indeed. Thanks to Balu for sharing!

Step 2 - Add a new background image

If you haven’t replaced the background image already you could visit Deziner Folio and get the set of 74 Hi Res Windows Vista Wallpapers.

Step 3 - Live it up a little

Install Google Desktop and add live search and all the gadgets you can fit on your desktop. After a minute or two your Windows XP could look something like this:

Time stops at Grand Central

A flash mob of people descend on Grand Central to perform what has to be one of the best improvisations ever. It has everyone in the entire station utterly confused!

The event was organized by an awesome group called “Improv Everywhere“.

Milestone - half a million page views

Just noticed from the stats that Blogvaria passed yet another milestone. More than 500.000 page views since New Year 2007, and it’s not that long ago when it turned 250.000 or 100.000 hits/views for that matter.

Furthermore, the average visitor is flipping through approximately 6-7 pages a visit which means some of you really find the stuff I write about interesting - thank you!

I’ll try to keep it up and make my best effort to bring you quality content.

Thanks for your shown interest!

Thomas

P.S. Please feel free to share any comments/requests/questions you may have regarding the content of this blog. Even though I write mainly about the things that interest me the most at any given time, I could target the post in certain directions if I find your input intriguing :)

Mozy - Simple Online Backup

Mozy comes in 2 flavours, one for home users (MozyHome) and one for business users (MozyPro). The first is free as long as you don’t need to backup more than 2GB of personal stuff. To get started simply sign up, download and install the setup files. Then pick your backup folders and files and you are all set, the rest is automatic.

Features

  • Open/locked file support: Mozy will back up your documents whether they’re open or closed.
  • 128-bit SSL encryption: The same technology used by banks secures your data during the backup process.
  • 448-bit Blowfish encryption: Secures your files while in storage, providing peace of mind that your private data is safe from hackers.
  • Automatic: Schedule the times to back up and MozyHome does the rest.
  • New and changed file detection: MozyHome finds and saves the smallest changes.
  • Backs up Outlook files: Disaster-proof email protection.
  • Block-level incremental backup: After the initial backup, MozyHome only backs up files that have been added or changed, making subsequent backups lightning fast.

Even if you already have an external disk storing all your valuable information, it could come in handy to have it on-line as well in case your house burns down or any other strange happening occurs…

It’s all automatic so why not go straight to registration?
