Still running win95?

Windows 95 boot screenI saw from my stats the other day that I’ve more than 100 unique visitors identifying themselves as win95 users. I find that somewhat interesting and a bit hilarious.

Why are you still using this ancient Microsoft OS and furthermore, are you still running it on the original PC’s?

It’s more than a decade since the initial release and in computer years that would probably equal a century. How on earth can you get any work done? You must be holding on to the same software as well, otherwise your PC’s wouldn’t be a) compatible and b) able to do more than one task at the time.

Compared to real life you could say you are still riding the horse instead of a car, rowing a boat instead of flying or using candlelights instead of light bulbs for illumination. The environmental benefits aren’t the same though.

Dear win 95 user, please step forward as I’m really genuinely curious to find out!

Norwegians and Digital TV

Norwegians and Digital TVWhile I was catching up on the latest news from Norway the other day one story caught my attention. Over the next 3 years Norway will convert to digital broadcasts and stop the old analogue signals sometime during 2010. The national broadcast company has just recently released the list of channels included in the basic package causing a fire-storm amongst the public.

Apparently which channels that should or should not be included is far more important than almost anything else. I do understand the need for some entertainment (as the weather is constantly disappointing) but PLEASE get a life already!

Turning LEGO into ART

As a kid I always loved LEGO, and up until recently so did my kids. Unfortunately LEGO went from packages filled with regular bricks that could be used to build whatever your imagination came up with to larger pre-shaped bricks that strongly limited those possibilities.

Lately I’ve seen more and more boxes of the good-old LEGO bricks for sale, and the childhood memories started flashing again. With any luck I’ll convince my youngest (almost 2) to start playing with LEGO, as I believe it’s a great way to enhance creativity and challenge the imagination.

To further illustrate what I’m talking about have a look at Nathan Sawaya’s fine artwork. Sawaya actually left a career as a lawyer to become a LEGO artist (the lawyers are really making to much aren’t they…).

Introducing the Comic Strip Add-on

Todays Comic Add-onA couple of months ago I created a simple PHP script to show the “Help Desk” comic on the sidebar. This time I’ve rewritten the code in order to show more comics (only today’s) and added a caching system that updates the links every 5 hours. Except during the update procedure the add-on should load much faster, and by combining it with my Lightbox Media add-on browsing the comics is sweet and easy.

I’m not sure if I’m allowed to distribute the code yet, as there seams to be some copyright issues. On the other hand Netvibes and others are doing it already through their 3rd party modules. Thus, for the time being I’ll just keep it running during an undefined testing period.

That said, I would be happy to get some feedback on this little add-on.

P.S. Just noticed from the stats that Blogvaria passed another milestone. More than 100.000 page views since New Year, and it’s not that long ago when it turned 50.000 hits/views. Furthermore, the average visitor is flipping through approximately 8 pages a visit which means some of you actually find the stuff I write about interesting - thank you!

Facebook - Windows online

Facebook wants to become like Windows (an Internet version) by allowing new partners access to their 23 million registered users. In a press conference Thursday Facebook revealed their new strategy, which will kick-off by giving the users the possibility of uploading and share videos. This to compete against YouTube off course, one of Google’s latest acquisitions.

However, the second big news might be even more exciting. Mark Zuckerberg (CEO - Facebook) compares his new strategy with Microsoft’s in the last part of the 80’s.

Zuckerberg announced, like the rumours had said, a new strategy that will allow other companies to reach the users using their own applications served through the Facebook system (web).

It’s a very ambitious goal and is somewhat opposite of the way we are used to explore the Internet. Rather than jumping from one site to another Zuckerberg believes that the users (you and me) wants as many services gathered on the same service - which is Facebook off course.

So far the social networks have been closed platforms, but this is now coming to an end apparently.

Facebook has already recruited 65 software companies that wishes to add their applications/services to Facebook. Among the most known is Amazon who wants the users to write book reviews that will appear simultaneously on Facbook and Amazon.
