WCMS Frontend Demo

In just a few days I’ll upload the latest version of my Content Management System (WCMS) so you can click around and get a feeling of what it’s all about. Some screen shots from the administration panel will follow soon after.

WCMS

Unlike a lot of the big companies I’ll actually be displaying a stable release meant for production environments, rather than the typical “Beta version this build that”.

Please note! The WCMS’ newsletter module will replace all other newsletters running on evaria.com and its sub-domains, simply to get a more up-to-date, united and SPAM free module. I also believe the newsletter thing is soon a thing in the past, as Feeds do this job much more efficiently, not to say faster. Therefore I might also consider removing this module, but for now I’ll just gather it all in one place.

WCMS frontend (what the normal visitor will see) is opened in a new window when you click this sentence.

Please feel free to add comments about bugs (if you find any), security issues (shouldn’t be any - knock on wood), requests or any other question you might have.

Thoughts on Internet Explorer 7

Microsoft has released Internet Explorer 7 but only for Windows XP SP2 users. If you are running a previous version of Microsoft Windows, you´ll need to upgrade to Windows XP SP2 first. A slightly more secure version of Internet Explorer 7 will be released in January 2007 with the Windows Vista operating system.

Notable among the new features within IE 7 for Windows XP are a redesigned interface, tabbed browsing, a built-in RSS feed reader, and a new Favorites Center. Despite nearly two and half years of development, the new browser falls short of complying with Web standards and of matching features found in competing browsers, and despite an aggressive marketing campaign to the contrary, IE 7 is not that much more secure that IE 6, in part because of its reuse of old IE 6 code and a crippling legacy that Microsoft is slow to patch existing IE flaws.

Quick guide to phpMyAdmin

This article explains how to get phpMyAdmin up and running on a Windows machine. It is however only ment to handle your databases running on localhost and should not be used for production environment.

PHPMyAdmin

Download the latest zip file from phpMyAdmin and unpack it to your htdocs directory in Apache. As of version 2.8 phpMyAdmin comes with an installer, which probably is a great feature if you’re an advanced database administrator. I on the other hand liked the old way, where all you needed to do was updating/filling in the config file.

Firefox vs Opera

In case you´ve been living under a rock lately, Opera recently announced that as of version 8.5, they will no longer be charging for usage of their browser.

In the past, previous versions were free for download. However, unless you paid for it, you were greeted by a built-in banner advertisement during the entirety of your web browsing. I had given it a try a few years ago, but simply had not found anything useful enough to merit either paying for it, or tolerating the ads. So, I switched back to Internet Explorer (pre-Firefox).

How to install PHP5 on Windows

This article is a quick guide to getting PHP 5 running on your Windows machine (be it Windows 98/Me or Windows NT/2000/XP/2003). Note! I advise you remove all files like php.ini and PHP related DLLs from the Windows SYSTEM folder before moving on with a new PHP installation.

1. Download the PHP binaries

PHP is free and comes complete with the source code. If you are not interested in hacking the PHP source code, you can simply download the Windows binaries. Both the binaries and the source code can be found at the PHP website. At the time I wrote this, the relevant PHP binary to download comes in a zip file (PHP 5.1.3 zip package). The Windows installer version does not include the binaries to run PHP5 as an Apache module.
