Wi-Fi Detector Shirt

This might be THE ultimate geek T-shirt! Now you can display the current wi-fi signal strength to yourself and everyone around you with this stylish Wi-Fi Detector Shirt. The glowing bars on the front of the shirt dynamically change as the surrounding wi-fi signal strength fluctuates. Finally you can get the attention you deserve as others bow to you as their reverential wi-fi god, while geeky chicks swoon at your presence.

Introducing AVG version 8

AVG products are running on over 70 million computers worldwide, mainly because of the free AND trustworthy 7.5 edition I believe. However, AVG has always delivered fast, effective security without the performance-sapping overheads of other security suites (Norton), and AVG Internet Security 8.0 continues that tradition.

Now available as a special time limited offer for up to 3 home computers with a 2 years Subscription for less than EUR 96.59 (153 USD)!

This means you can get both your office and home computer fully secured and still be able to provide me with a valid license (hint; finders fee) for less than EUR 50 a year!

Virus Bulletin review, March 2008 [ Source, requires registration ]

The combination of a wide range of features – including some nice innovations – with much improved design and usability, stability, unexceptionable system impact and highly impressive detection, seems like a winning one, and I expect to see AVG continuing to go from strength to strength with this release.

The New Alexa Rankings

Alexa.com recently announced that they’ve changed the algorithm that calculates the rank for any given website. This means that rather than basing the rank on data collected from the Alexa toolbar they’re now aggregating data from multiple sources to give you a better indication of website popularity among the entire population of Internet users.

Since its beginning in 1998 Alexa Rankings have become a yardstick by which website popularity is measured. I for one welcome the change as it looks like the new algorithm benefits my rankings :) It could very well be that European and other non-US websites will see an increase in measured traffic due to the broader data collection.

Firefox fix to fix previous fix

Security updates in FF 2.0.0.13 introduced stability problems in the JavaScript engine. This is known to have caused sporadic crashes during JavaScript garbage collection. Some of these crashes showed evidence of memory corruption under certain circumstances and you can only presume that with enough effort at least some of these could be exploited to run arbitrary code.

The latest version, Firefox 2.0.0.14 (released yesterday), eliminates the instability problems. In case your auto-update hasn’t done so all ready I strongly suggest you update Firefox immediately.
