Free Student Software Packages

In a combined effort of reducing pirating and helping out students SoftwareFor.org have put together 2 software distro’s, one for Mac and one for Windows (Linux users know their way around anyway).

The ISO’s (CD images) are downloadable via BitTorrent technology or HTTP mirrors (direct downloads) and consists of free and/or open source applications. A full list of available software is found in their FAQ.

Don’t forget your break…

For all those die-hard geeks out there in the Ether, we all know it’s hard to walk away from our beloved terminal’s. But, for both mind and body it’s important we do so. Of course, we need a technical solution to this problem - so bring in some Open Source software, by the name of Workrave.

Workrave is a program that assists in the recovery and prevention of Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI). The program frequently alerts you to take micro-pauses, rest breaks and restricts you to your daily limit. Please refer to the feature comparison for a complete list of features, and how the program performs with respect to other programs on the market. The program runs on GNU/Linux and Microsoft Windows.

Daily Limit AlertIt reminds you to take breaks with nice little pop-ups that even monitor your keyboard and mouse usage. When you have that important meeting, you can disable it - just don’t forget to re-enable it…

Easy PHP highlighter

Easy PHP Highlighter is a small application that highlights the source of a PHP file and outputs it to a XHTML valid html file for easy viewing by other people. It has language support for English, German, Spanish, and Portuguese.

PHP Highlight Example (A MySQL backup class used in my latest CMS)

The real beauty is the ease of use. You simply start the application, browse and select a file and the new XHTML output file is automatically created in the same directory you picked the file from.

You can probably use it to highlight JavaScripts as well, but for now (version 2) you can only select files with a PHP extension. Not that it limits anything as you could just alter the extension temporarily to create the output file.

Update: In order to highlight Java code (or any other code) the page you’re going to “transform” needs to have the PHP tags inserted (Start of page -> <?php and at the end -> ?>) along with a PHP file extension. The following example illustrates my point (My Lightbox Media JavaScript add-on).

It works but requires more work -> time-consuming -> boring -> needs fix…

Follow the lights

Having kids makes you more concerned, especially for anything that might happen to them when they are playing outside. The following displays a most effective “tool” to prevent people from crossing the street on a red light…

A bit over the top maybe, but the person driving the SUV certainly learned a lesson. And maybe next time this might have saved someone’s life…
