XP still favoured over Vista

OS market share trends 2006-2007Recent OS market share trends provided by Net Applications reveals that the IT community still favours XP over Vista. Only minor changes in OS’ used by Internet users are registered over the last year.

The number of Vista users did not exceed the number of Win 2k users until June this year!

It looks like the customers have listened to Gartner and other IT-experts advising their clients to wait until the first service pack for Vista sees the day of light. Despite numerous rumours Microsoft has still not revealed a date for this most needed update.

The numbers from Net Applications also shows that the Apple users are slowly moving over on Intel based PC’s. All other *nix users are only referred to as “Others” regardless which distro/version their running.

I for one will probably stay with XP until the next release from Microsoft. Rumours have it that “Windows 7″ is scheduled to be released early 2010. By that time I definitely need to buy a new laptop anyway :)

How to respond to insults

Ted Goff, creator and maintainer of Newsletter Cartoons posted this hilarious comic today. For all you guys working in support; this is how you respond to those frustrated, irritated and/or annoying callers…

Surviving an insult

Simply the only answer that kills the conversation without you actually being rude (officially).

Introducing Wireless USB

Later this year you might be able to throw away your cables when (if) wireless USB hits the market.

The following products have already been approved by the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF):

  • Dell Inspiron 1720 Laptop
  • D-Link DUB-1210 Wireless USB adapter
  • D-Link DUB-2240 4-port Wireless USB hub
  • IOGEAR Wireless USB Hub og Adapter
  • Lenovo T61/T61p Laptop

Some might argue we’re just getting yet another wireless standard, but wireless USB separates from standards like Bluetooth and WLAN due to much higher bandwidth. Wireless USB will provide the same speed as with cable (480Mb/s), and supports 127 simultaneously connected units.

How to compress your JavaScripts

Dean Edwards has written and released a most useful tool that allows you to both compress and also obfuscate your JavaScripts source code. Not only will your page load quicker (smaller filesize) but your scripts are harder to steal as the source is difficult to read (to humans).

You can download the “packer” or use the online version.

Packed scripts should successfully unpack on all browsers that support JavaScript. Only basic JavaScript functionality is used to decode the packed script.

Some browsers may not support the packer itself. The web interface requires DOM support. Legacy browsers will display a disabled interface.

Among the more known users of this tool is jQuery, which is a great library with numerous plugins ready to use.

Apple’s gone to far

I really liked the new look (redesign) of apple.com last month. But I do feel the iPhone has got a bit too much of the cake!

Apple - iPhone

I for one are now sick and tired of listening to the hype about this new phone (it’s a phone right?) which I for one will have no use for whatsoever as Southern Spain doesn’t support this so-called fantastic new gadget.

Maybe it’s time to focus more on what they actually do best, build decent well designed computers (and now also websites) !?
