Content Management Systems

Devlounge.net rounds up and reviews 10 content management systems, including self-hosted and hosted-for-you solutions.

With all the content management systems out there (CMS), it’s very hard to pick the perfect one to run your blog or project on. This question frequently comes out everywhere I go: “Which CMS Should I use in this situation?”

There are thousands of CMS systems out there – some self-hosted, and some hosted for you. While we can not cover them all, I’ve rounded up a few of my favourites and broken down some of the essential features for you to have a look at all in one glance, for a nice, quick comparison.

Lightbox Media

Lightbox Media (LBM) is yet another clone of Lokesh Dhakar’s Lightbox (v2) image add-on. It’s been slightly modified to allow any content (media) apart from images to be shown inside an iframe. This is detected automatically so there’s no need to modify text outside the source files. The overlay effect is applied exactly like before by adding rel=”lightbox” inside the link tag, or rel=”lightbox[some-media-set]“.

The download includes all files needed to set it up on any website, including the Prototype JavaScript Framework and some add-ons provided by Script.aculo.us. It also includes an example page in order to show how you should add the JavaScripts, style etc. Additionally lightbox-media.js and lightbox-media.css holds a few basic instructions on how to alter iframe height and width and set absolute URI’s for the navigation images.

Demo’s can be seen at our Area51 / LBM test site, or on our previous post Introducing Lightbox Media. Feel free to comment and/or ask for/provide help related to this add-on.

Update: Based on user input I’m now pleased to announce version 1.2 of Lightbox Media. The update includes a fix for upper-case file names and also the possibility to set the width and hight for the iframed content by adding a short query string to the link. Demo’s are available at our new Area51 / LBM2 test site.

Planned redesign

I’ve been thinking of changing theme for awhile but really didn’t want to reinvent the wheel (again). Therefore I’ve spent the last couple of days getting to know K2, the next generation Kubrick theme template developed by Michael Heilemann, Chris J Davis, Zeo, Steve Lam and Ben Sherratt.

It appears that applying your own layout and still keep (get) some really great functionality is relatively straightforward (if you know some HTML, CSS and PHP…) . I’ll return with more info as the “localhost-project” continues.

In the meanwhile you can look forward to my Lightbox Media release tomorrow (if time permits) which I hope will prove useful to those of you missing a few features from the original Lightbox image viewer.

Bugatti Veyron

Ever wondered if THE car goes as fast as they say? Well if you can waste 8 minutes you’ll be able to see for yourself. Bugatti Veyron is supposed to be the fastest car in serial production today, it’s even faster than the F1 race cars and that should put things in perspective…

10 Great CSS Tips

This article explains how 10 easy CSS tips can help make your web development life easier when starting out on a new project. First tip (reminder) “Keep it simple” is probably the most important one – which is also referred to as “Less is more” at my office. The following tips are basically an outline of good design (thumb)rules that anyone should try to follow.
